LMMS
A free, cross-platform music production studio.
LMMS (Linux MultiMedia Studio) is a free music production application aimed at electronic-music workflows: a beat/bassline editor, a song editor, an instrument browser, an automation editor, and effect chains, all centred on a pattern-based arrangement model similar to FL Studio. It supports VST plugins on Windows and Linux through a wrapper, plus its own LADSPA and LV2 plugin chains.
Tobias Junghans started LMMS in 2004 (originally as Linux MultiMedia Studio, when the project only ran on Linux). It is now cross-platform, and a small but dedicated community has kept the project alive through several major rewrites.
LMMS occupies a particular niche: hobby and bedroom musicians who want a free, FL-Studio-style DAW. Compared with Ardour (which is oriented toward audio engineering and recording) and MuseScore (notation), LMMS is the obvious open-source choice for loop-based electronic-music composition.
