Ceph

A unified, distributed storage system.

Ceph logo

Ceph provides object storage (compatible with Amazon S3 and OpenStack Swift APIs), block storage (Ceph RBD), and a POSIX filesystem (CephFS) from the same underlying RADOS cluster. Each piece of data is replicated or erasure-coded across many storage nodes, with the CRUSH algorithm distributing data so that node or rack failures don't lose data and don't require explicit re-balancing scripts.

Sage Weil started Ceph as part of his PhD work at UC Santa Cruz in 2003. Inktank spun out to commercialise the project, and Red Hat acquired Inktank in 2014. The Ceph Foundation, hosted by the Linux Foundation, now governs the project, with Red Hat and many other contributors funding ongoing development.

Ceph scales to thousands of nodes and exabytes of data without a single point of failure, which is why CERN, the US Department of Energy national labs, and many cloud providers run it. It is also commonly used as the storage backend behind OpenStack clouds and as the persistent-volume layer underneath Kubernetes via the Rook operator.
